Five Very Compelling Reasons You Want WINGS in Your Life

I am the luckiest girl in the world, because I got a chance to devour Elizabeth Richards' latest Black City book before it came out, and let me tell you, the devouring was good.  After I'd sated my vampire-dystopia lust, I came up with a few reasons why you need to read Wings.

1. Ash

Yes, yes, other characters are all fine and good, but the dark-haired smoldering vampire is the one I desperately wanted to see make it to the end.  No spoilers here, but I will tell you that the smoldering level was far above adequate and that there were some very swoony moments between him and Natalie.

Here comes the smolder

2. The United Sentry States

The world of the Black City books is a world devastated by war, populated by humans, vampires, lupines and bastets, and divided into a handful of giant states.  Wings shows us even more of this vividly reimagined America, from copper and verdigris Gallium to glittering golden Centrum.

3. Explosions

Explosions!  Fire!  Mayhem!  Richards pulls no punches in the final installment and no character (or city) gets off easy.  Wings is at its heart an action story, a revolution story, and it never stops to catch its breath.

BOOM

4. Plot Twists

Apropos to the above reason--Wings is a twisty ride, packed full of shocking reveals, new information and terrible betrayals.  Every time I thought I had something or someone figured out, they would turn around and completely surprise me.  I loved every second of it.

5. Tragic Backstory

Wings ties two stories together--the story of Ash and Natalie in the present day and the story of a boy named Edmund thirty years ago, a boy whose life is impossibly tragic and heart-wrenching.  His story changed how I saw the entire trilogy and every character in it.  Mind. Blown.

WHAT EVEN JUST HAPPENED I CAN'T EVEN

WINGS.  You'll be making this face by the end:

Wings will be out Thursday, June 12th!

Virtual tour of Harry Potter movie locations

It's no secret I'm 'nuttier than squirrel poo' about Harry Potter. So when I recently got the chance to see the real boy wizard, Daniel Radcliffe, in a play on the West End, my equally obsessed friend and I decided to have a Harry Potter themed day in London, where we visited a bunch of the movie locations (and did a lot of stalking outside the Noel Coward theatre's backstage door).

Of course, London is a loooong way for many of you to travel, but thanks to a little bit of magic (okay, Google maps) you too can follow the tour! So grab your brooms, put on your wizard robes, and step into the wonderful world of Harry Potter...

LOCATION 1: PLATFORM 9 3/4

The adventure starts at King's Cross St Pancras at Platform 9 3/4, where Harry and Co. famously boarded the Hogwarts Express. There's now a permanent display at the station, where you can get your photograph taken with a luggage trolley (complete with Hedwig's cage!). It's located to the right of the ticket barriers leading to platforms 9 and 10. Unsurprisingly, it's a very popular tourist spot and there can be sizable crowds, but it's worth waiting around for a few minutes to get your photo taken. If you're bored, you can always pop into the new Harry Potter shop next to it, and pick up a Time Turner or wand!

LOCATION 2: DIAGON ALLEY

Once at King's Cross, hop on the Northern Line to Bank. It's then just an 8 minute walk to Leadenhall Market, where they filmed many of the exterior Diagon Alley scenes in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

DIAGON ALLEY MOVIE SET

You can now virtually visit the Warner Bros London Studio Tour set of Diagon Alley using Google Maps! Check out the famous locations, such as Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes and Ollivander's wand shop!

LOCATION 3: LEAKY CAULDRON

While at Leadenhall Market, go to Lime Street Passage where you'll find the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron, as seen in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Unfortunately, they don't serve Butterbeer *sad face*

LOCATION 4: GRINGOTTS BANK

Finally, head to Australia House on the Strand, where the interior shots for Gringotts were filmed. You might get lucky and even see some goblins!

PHOENIX (A Black City Novel) Debut Madness: Interview with Elizabeth Richards + Giveaway!

Yesterday marked the release of PHOENIX, the second book in the BLACK CITY series by the League's very own Elizabeth Richards. I'm so excited to be part of Phoenix's debut week celebration, WOOT WOOT! Stick around for the end of this post for your chance to enter to win a copy of Phoenix and swag!

Part dystopian, part paranormal, and all fun, Black City left readers with questions that I can't wait to see answered in the sequel. Speaking of questions, I asked Elizabeth a few about what it was like to write a follow-up.

Q & A with League Author Elizabeth Richards

1)  Authors often say that writing a sequel is crazy-making. How was writing book two of the Black City series different than writing book one?  Overall, was it more challenging to write Phoenix than Black City and if so, why?

OMG, it was SO crazy making! I have to admit, I was not prepared for the insanity of writing a book under a publisher’s deadline. When you write your first book, you’re able to take your time with it and there’s very little pressure as the only people who are reading it are you and your friends/crit partners. But when you write the sequel suddenly there are expectations and deadlines and OMG! Pressure!!! It’s not easy being creative on a deadline, but I love, love, love, love, LOVE it. Writing PHOENIX was such a learning experience, and I truly believe I’ve become a better writer because of it…I’ve just developed a few facial ticks along the way.

(*hums Under Pressure by David Bowie and Freddy Mercury in sequel-writing solidarity*)

2)  Which scene was your favorite to write in Phoenix?

Hee hee, that’s easy. The scene in the Barren Lands where Elijah is in the pool with his top off. Need I say more?

(No. No, you needn't.)

3)  We got plenty of Ash and Natalie moments in book one (woo hoo!)  Would you say there's more or less romance in Phoenix?  Is it difficult to mix romance in with all the action?

The action really ramps up in Phoenix, as Ash and Natalie have to travel across the United Sentry States in search of a weapon called the Ora, but there’s still plenty of steamy scenes! My editor said she was fanning herself at one particular scene between Ash and Nat. I can’t help myself; I heart Ash! Whenever I feel like there’s been a lot of action, I always like to slow things down again with a tender or sexy moment. I think it’s important that a book has these quieter moments, to give the reader time to breathe and connect with the characters…plus, ya know, Ash is pretty, so... *dreamy sigh*

(*sighs in unison*)

4)  What's your favorite sci-fi/fantasy sequel, movie or book?

Ooooh, good question! My favorite sequel is Terminator 2: Judgment Day. My twin sister and I watched that movie every night for about 6 months when we were teenagers. I was in love with Eddie Furlong and she was in love with Arnie. It’s a great movie—so much action, great special effects, and there’s some very tender moments in there too. I’m a huge Terminator fan.

(OMG, YES! Love that movie so hard! Poor, poor Arnie....plus, DAMN. Linda Hamilton had some killer deltoids!)

5)  Black City had some amazing world building. Was it hard to return to that world to write Phoenix, or did you find yourself diving right back in?

I dove right in! I was so excited to revisit the world, because I knew the action would move out of Black City and into other parts of the United Sentry States, and I was keen to explore these locations, as they’d been in my imagination for years. It was such a treat to write. I particularly enjoyed the Barren Lands segment.

(I can't wait to read!)

6)  If you could choose, would you be a Darkling or human?  If Darkling, which type?

Gosh! That’s a fab question. Mmmm….I think I’d be a Darkling. Although they have a terrible time of it, they’re really fascinating creatures and so romantic. (They have ‘Blood Mates’, which is when their dual heart activates when they meet their true love.). I’d like to be a Nordin Darkling, as they’re the only species with wings, and I think it would be awesome to be able to fly and have glittering orange eyes and rippling ice-white hair.

(Sign me up, too!)

7) Ash gets a ton of love from readers (as he should!)  Did Ash come to you fully formed, or did he evolve slowly?  Did you consciously give him any traits from real people?

Ash came to me fully formed. It was strange really, as I was watching a movie one night—I believe it was Charlie Bartlett, starring Robert Downy Junior—and the character of Ash just popped into my head. I instantly became obsessed with this drug-dealing, supernatural boy who gets a heartbeat when he meets his true love, and as soon as the movie finished, I grabbed my laptop and wrote the first scene. I’ve always been drawn to broken but artistic bad boys, so I think Ash has the sort of beautiful but damaged soul of someone like River Phoenix; Keanu Reeves’ hair; the bad-boy attitude of JD from Heathers; and the quiet cool of Jared Leto’s character in My So Called Life.

(Niiiceeee...and now I'm humming the new Thirty Seconds to Mars song....)

8)  Do you have any particular songs that inspired you while writing Phoenix?

I listened to a LOT of Two Steps From Hell, particularly Freedom Fighter. And Beyonce, because she’s awesome and I love her.

(Excellent choices!)

9)  Can you give us a hint as to what you're working on next?

I’m currently working on book 3 of the BLACK CITY series—I’ll be revealing the cover later this month—and have just sent in a proposal for a new sci-fi series to my publisher! Fingers crossed they like it, as I’m very excited about this new idea! :D

Definitely keeping my fingers crossed, and thank you SO MUCh for taking part in this interview!

Top 5 famous phoenixes

To celebrate the release of her second book, PHOENIX (A Black City Novel), Elizabeth Richards lists the top five famous phoenixes that have inspired her!

1. FAWKES

Dumbledore’s pet is unquestionably the most famous phoenix in children’s literature, and one of my all-time favorite Harry Potter characters. Not only does this loyal bird have killer eye-gouging abilities and magical tears (how cool!), but both Harry Potter and Voldemort’s wands contain one of Fawke’s tail feathers, which plays a vital role in the series. Plus, he’s named after Guy Fawkes—the man responsible for the Gunpowder Plot of 1605—which, if you’re British like me, is sort of amusing!

2. JEAN GREY

Jean Grey, AKA Phoenix, is probably my favorite character from X-Men. Not only does she have cool telekinetic and telepathic powers, but as Phoenix she’s able to control matter at a subatomic level, fly through space, create stargates that transport her anywhere in the universe…basically she’s just bad ass. Oh, and she gets to snog Cyclops and Wolverine.

3. SIMON PHOENIX

When I was a teenager in the 90s (omg, showing my age there!), one of the movies I watched over-and-over with my twin sister was Demolition Man, starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes. Snipes played this over-the-top villain called Simon Phoenix, and I have to admit I rooted for him to win! I loved the dystopian vibe of Demolition Man, and that’s certainly carried through into my adult life.

4. RIVER PHOENIX

Another blast from my past is the late, great, River Phoenix. He was the James Dean of the grunge generation—talented, beautiful, damaged, and unfortunately he also died tragically young. He starred in several of my favorite movies growing up, including My Own Private Idaho and Stand By Me, and my MC, Ash, is based on him.

5. PHOENIX, ARIZONA

As any Twilight fan knows, Phoenix is where perpetually blushing Bella Swan used to live with her mom, Renée. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather live in sunny Phoenix than constantly-rainy Forks (I get enough rain here in the UK, thanks!). Then again, I wouldn’t get to meet Edward…mmm, okay, I’ll put up with a little bit of rain.

About PHOENIX (A Black City Novel)

Engaged to be married, Ash and Natalie are just starting to build a life together when things in the United Sentry States go from bad to worse. Ash and Natalie find themselves at the center of turmoil when dictator Purian Rose threatens Natalie’s life unless Ash votes in favor of Rose’s Law—a law that will send Darklings and other dissenters to a deadly concentration camp known as the Tenth.

When Ash can’t bring himself to trade Natalie’s life for those of millions of Darklings, her fate is sealed. Enter Elijah Theroux, the handsome Bastet boy Natalie once saved from her mother’s labs, where he’d been experimented on and tortured. It was his venom the Sentry used to create the lethal Golden Haze, the heart of the government conspiracy that led to Black City’s uprising and Ash’s rebirth as the Phoenix, the face of the rebellion. Elijah is back and Ash doesn’t like him; it’s clear he’s taken with Natalie, and Ash fears she may have feelings for him as well.

But Elijah also may have the answer to taking down Purian Rose for good—a powerful weapon called the Ora. Ash, Natalie and Elijah just have to escape Black City undetected to find it. But fleeing the city and finding this weapon (if it even exists) are easier said than done, and the quest could tear Ash and Natalie apart, even pushing them into the arms of others.

This enthralling sequel to Black City is just as absorbing, delicious and steamy as the first book, leaving readers hungry for the series conclusion.

Keep 'em hanging

“Just one more chapter...”

Does that sound familiar? We’ve all been there. Fifteen chapters later, it’s four o’clock in the morning and your eyes feel like they’ve been licked by a thousand newborn kittens (it's not as cute as it sounds), and yet you still can’t stop reading. What sort of witchcraft do these authors have over us? Why can’t we just PUT THE DAMN BOOK DOWN AND GO TO SLEEP? Well, chances are they’ve perfected the art of the 'chapter out'.

Chapter outs are something I spend a lot of time over when writing my novels. In fact, I won’t start a chapter until I know how it’s going to end, so I know how to build up the tension and keep the action rushing toward that (hopefully) exciting end point.

Good chapter outs should finish on a revelation, turn the story on its head, or raise the stakes (and preferably do all three), so it keeps the reader on their toes and desperate to find out what happens next. Of course, some endings are more successful than others, and I don't suggest every chapter ends on a 'dum-dum-duuuuuuuum' type cliffhanger, but it should keep the reader curious. Don't give them an excuse to put your book down and go to sleep!

In my opinion, the queen of the 'chapter out' is Suzanne Collins. She's made it something of an art form. If you don’t believe me, here are the chapter outs for the first three chapters in The Hunger Games (by the way, this next part of the post is going to contain some SERIOUS spoilers, so if you haven’t read The Hunger Games, then just assume everything I write next is life changing and awesome, and skip to the bottom...)

Chapter 1

Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smooths the slip of paper, and reads out the name in a clear voice. And it’s not me.
     It’s Primrose Everdeen.

(Chapter 1, Pg 24, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Scholastic Children's Books)

Holy hell fire! That’s an opening and a half.  The reader expects Katniss Everdeen’s name to be read out, so the swerve-a-rooney is not only shocking but it’s amazing character development, as it gives Katniss something to fight for, which isn’t just a ‘selfish’ need to save her own life. Brilliant. *tips hat*

Chapter 2

Oh well, I think. There will be twenty-four of us. Odds are someone else will kill him before I do.
Of course, the odds have not been very dependable of late.

(Chapter 2, Pg 40, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Scholastic Children's Books)

By this point, Peeta is clearly being set up as the love interest, and yet Katniss realizes she’s going to have to kill him. Talk about a doomed love! The reader is instantly gripped. How is this going to be resolved, so we get our ‘happily ever after’? Is it possible that we *gulp* won’t get a happy ending?

Chapter 3

“…Haymitch can well be the difference between your life and death!”
Just then, Haymitch staggers into the compartment.
“I miss supper?” he says in a slurred voice. Then he vomits all over the expensive carpet and falls in the mess.
“So laugh away,” says Effie Trinket. She hops in her pointy shoes around the pool of vomit and flees the room.

(Chapter 3, Pg 57, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Scholastic Children's Books)

By the end of chapter 3, we have all the conflict we need to keep reading to the end: a girl being thrown into the hunger games to save her little sister; a boy who loves her but their romance is doomed; and their only hope is a drunk. How is Katniss going to get out of this situation?

It's amazing how much you can achieve in just a few short sentences, so it's worth taking the time and effort to go through your chapter outs and ask yourself:

a) Does this reveal anything about the character/situation?
b) Does this raise the stakes?
c) Does this turn the story on its head?

By getting your chapters outs nailed, you too can keep readers up all night!

10 things you never wanted to know about Elizabeth Richards (but she’s going to tell you anyway)

1. Elizabeth is a YA author specializing in dystopian novels with a paranormal twist. If it has explosions and kissing in it (preferably at the same time), she’s there.

2. She’s an identical twin, and yes, she is the evil one, mwa ha ha ha ha ha.  *twirls moustache*

3. When querying her first YA novel, she accidentally invited an agent to her sister’s bachelorette party, and demanded they come dressed in hot-pants and fishnet stockings. This isn’t her most embarrassing story.

4. Penguin put in an offer for BLACK CITY the day after she got married! BEST. WEDDING GIFT. EVER.

5. Her favorite movie is Jaws. Or Halloween. Or maybe Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire…

6.  She’s decisive.

7.  She’s seen Daniel Radcliffe in the nude, twice, sadly both times in a theater with 500 other people. The sight of him doing a naked combat roll still haunts her dreams.

8.  Her favorite TV shows are Buffy, Being Erica, and Extreme Couponing.

9. She has a heart-shaped birthmark on her foot.

10. She can never think of ten things to say about herself…

11. Oh! She's bad at maths.
